Dartington Crystal Review: The Last Crystal Factory
If you attend a golf tournament or a business awards dinner, the trophy on the table is almost certainly from Dartington Crystal.
Based in Torrington, Devon, Dartington is the last major crystal manufacturer in the UK. It started in 1967 as a social experiment by the Dartington Hall Trust. They imported skilled glassblowers from Sweden to train Devon locals. The result was a uniquely British take on Scandinavian design: clean, unadorned, and heavy.
The Process: Mouth Blown
Walking onto the factory floor (which you can visit) is visceral. It is hot. It is loud. Teams of men (it is heavy, physical work) work in "Chairs" (teams).
- The Gatherer: Takes the molten blob from the furnace.
- The Blower: Blows the shape into a mold.
- The Maker: Adds the stem and foot.
Watching them make a wine glass in 60 seconds is a ballet.
The Product: Everyday Luxury
Dartington sits in the mid-market. They make accessible crystal. Their Dimple whisky glass (with a dimple in the base) is a design classic. They also own Royal Brierley (the only Royal Warrant holder for crystal) and Caithness Glass (paperweights).
The Verdict
It is not as fine as Riedel (machine made) or as ultra-luxury as Cumbria Crystal. But it is honest, handmade, and affordable. It is the "Honda Civic" of the glass world: reliable, well-made, and British.
Pros:

- The factory tour is excellent.
Cons:
- Some lower-end lines are machine-made (check the box).
